How do I care for a knocked-out tooth?
A knocked-out tooth is always a dental emergency. The longer your tooth is out of its socket, the more difficult it is to successfully reinsert, as the roots of the tooth eventually die.
If you’ve knocked out your tooth, try to locate it and rinse it off in lukewarm water. When handling the tooth, be sure to hold it by its crown and avoid touching the roots. Rinse your mouth out with lukewarm water and try to reinsert the tooth into its empty socket. If you’re able to get it in, bite down gently on it and make your way to Dr. Hernandez’s office immediately.
If you’re unable to reinsert the tooth into the empty socket, put it in a glass of milk or saliva and bring it with you.
What is an emergency root canal?
Some dental emergencies are the result of a problem that has been going on for a while, like a severely infected tooth.
If you find yourself with a sudden and intense toothache, you might need a root canal — a procedure that removes the inner tissue (pulp) of your tooth when it’s damaged, decayed, or infected.
After Dr. Hernandez removes your infected tooth pulp, he replaces it with a bio-safe substitute, then reinforces the structural integrity of your tooth with a dental crown.
